IAYT, NAMA and YA Announce
"An Overview of Regulatory Issues for Yoga, Yoga Therapy, and Ayurveda"
by Daniel Seitz, JD, EdD.
This is an invited paper forthcoming in the 2010 International Journal
of Yoga Therapy.
We are publishing this early because of the current work of the IAYT Educational
Standards Committee and hence the timeliness of this article.
Financial support for the research and writing of this article was provided
by IAYT, the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA) and Yoga Alliance
(YA). The purpose is to serve our common goal of well-informed communication and
decisions in this complicated and challenging area. Free access to all is provided as a public service.

Letters to NCCAM
In preparing for its next strategic plan, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) solicited input from stakeholders. Yoga is one of the most popular CAM therapies and we consider IAYT to be a significant stakeholder. We were inspired and encouraged by the Academic Consortium for Complementary and Health Care (ACCAHC). In addition to their own carefully crafted letter, ACCAHC also encouraged individual members to send in their own letters, while also providing well researched and insightful background material to the issues at hand for all. IAYT, together with Yoga Alliance (YA) and the National Ayurvedic Medical Association (NAMA), make up the Traditional World Medicine Group within ACCAHC.

"Yoga is a practice with so much to contribute for the preservation of health and the prevention of disease as well as direct therapeutic interventions for many disorders.
It has long been my thought, however, that Yoga, as a practice that does not fit the norms of conventional healthcare, has been relatively under recognized for the
contribution the practice can make to many dimensions of health. Popular and professional interest in our field is growing rapidly, however, as exhibited by the growth
in IAYT membership, the attendance at IAYT’s Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research, the articles published in IAYT journals, and the research on Yoga published in medical
journals and presented at research conferences. So it is time we took advantage of this opportunity to provide an explicit voice for our field and our association
concerning national research priorities in complementary and alternative medicine,” says John Kepner, IAYT’s Executive Director. “This is the first time IAYT has provided
comments to a federal agency. It was educational and challenging and we would like to express our appreciation to Eleanor Criswell, EdD, Sat Bir Khalsa, PhD,
Kelly McGonigal, PhD, and Amy Gage for their helpful suggestions on this not-so-simple letter.”

IAYT Board Liason to the Standards Committee
The IAYT Educational Standards Committee
This committee, chosen from volunteers from IAYT Member schools, is charged with

Yoga Therapy Today, December 2009
"IAYT is more than an organization; it is a movement in touch with the times. The
members of IAYT are defining the field in real time through their work and views
on what Yoga therapy is. That Yoga therapy is a continuously evolving field is reflected
in the new title, Yoga Therapy Today." Julie Deife, editor in chief.

International Journal of
Yoga Therapy 2009
“The 2009 International Journal of Yoga Therapy is our biggest issue ever (160 pp),
full of new research on yoga and meditation, thought-provoking perspectives on current
challenges in our field, and practical information.
The research section includes a special focus on yoga for seniors, with a
comprehensive research review as well as original research on yoga for mental health,
physical function, and bone health in older adults.”
Kelly McGonigal, PhD, Editor in Chief.

Our Yoga Therapy in Practice section includes articles on best practices and principles for working with trauma and grief, along with a guide to starting a hospital-based yoga therapy program. As has become the norm for our journal, the perspectives will set the conversation for the next year in our community, tackling issues like standards for the training of Yoga therapists, how to bring yoga to underserved populations, how yoga is portrayed in the media, and how to best scientifically study Ayurveda and Yoga.
The issue also features three unique pieces: an article by Ganesh Mohan, MBBS on how to best use traditional Yogic and Ayurvedic sources in Yoga therapy, an interview with Timothy McCall, MD and a transcript of an address by Dean Ornish, MD, delivered recently to the U.S. Senate, on the role of prevention and integrative medicine in the future of healthcare.
We hope this issue will be both an inspiration and important resource to your continuing education and professional practice.
